I can see what Frey attempted here; an ambitious melting pot of a novel with multi plots and characters that reflects an entire city but it just felt like it was Jackie Collins trying to pull of Dostoyevski. And Jackie Collins is a fine writer - but she knows her limits. I dont think Frey knows hisn limits - which is typical of any addict (using or recovered). It was just waffle and while the no " " dialogue works great in a diatribe when 3 or more characters are chewing the fat it becomes very hard to follow and Frey even ended up having to write the characters names before they speak in some places which rendered the whole " " style as absurd and incredibly limited. As for the history of LA chunks that were totally irrellevant to the story, well they felt like they had been lifted straight off of Wikipedia or some book on LA. Those facts didnt make the book literature and they came across as some try hard batting above his league. And Im no Frey hater here - I thought AMLP was good and I thought MFL was great. But this?
